History of Blackjack

Blackjack The Game The History

Blackjack, also known as 'twenty-one' and 'pontoon', is a most popular casino game. Nowadays this card game can be often found in a casino where people try their luck. As there is no written document so the history or origin of blackjack is still unknown to the world. But we got some written references about it in a book named Miguel de Cervantes, written by a gambler author named Don Quixote. The main characters of this tale are proficient at cheating at "Vientiane". In Spanish Vientiane means “twenty-one” and so that the object of this game is suppose to reach 21 points without busting, and that the Ace values one or eleven. The Spanish Barajas which were without tens and by which the game was played with, makes the game similar to the current Spanish 21. With the reference of Miguel de Cervantes which was written between 1601 and 1602, we can say that the game was played since the beginning of the 17th Century or even earlier. There is another myth about the history of blackjack that Most of the people believe, the game blackjack born in France during the 17th century.

In the United States, Blackjack was introduced following the French Revolution in the 1800's. At the beginning blackjack had not get that much popularity as a card game, compared to other popular card games of the time.

So to increase its popularity the casino offered payout's as a bonus. And this was the turning point which attracted people and made them interested to gambling on blackjack. One of the variations on the bonus payout was, when a player has the blackjack which values 10 points and an ace which values 11 points, then he wins the game and that’s why it’s called Blackjack. Though with the increasing popularity of the game, the casino stopped offering the payout's but the name 'blackjack' remained the same.

In 1956 Roger Baldwin had published a book in which he explained the strategy of the game blackjack. According to his theory only with some mathematical strategies, the game of blackjack can be easily won. In his paper Roger Baldwin had shown the use of statistics, calculators, and probability in the game of blackjack. He is best known for making a significant change in the way of playing blackjack. And by following his strategy blackjack is played today.

Professor Edward Thorp An outstanding blackjack player in the history of Blackjack has proved the theory of Baldwin's by applying mathematical theories in the game of blackjack. In 1963 Thorp published a book where he explained various ways of how to win at the game of blackjack. With the impact of this national best seller book many casinos across the United States began to change the rules of blackjack. However, though like the most other games of gambling, the origin of the blackjack's still is a mystery. But no doubt the research and analysis about this very popular game would reveal its origin someday.
